College Counseling

Southfield’s program of college counseling is designed to help each student find for herself a suitable match in higher education. To this end the college office provides both advice and information throughout a process involving a student’s self-study, research, application, and final decision. The office also works in close contact with students’ advisers, teachers, and coaches in order to ensure that colleges and universities receive the fullest image of each student’s achievements and promise.

The process of researching and applying to colleges and universities constitutes a major milestone in a young person’s development toward adulthood. Therefore, while the counseling office offers extensive communication, aid in organizing information, and direction in the changing environment of today’s higher education admissions, the primary responsibility for choosing a path after Southfield lies with the student. She is the one who after graduation will join a new community of learners and, later, to apply what she has learned in making positive contributions to society.

In their senior spring girls have an additional support available to them: an elective course called “The College Experience.” By open discussion of the next stage of girls’ academic and social lives, this seminar raises students’ awareness of what to expect and, in some cases, of what to avoid, when they move away from home.

By attending to students’ needs during their time at Southfield, and by anticipating many of the challenges that lie before them, the Office of College Counseling extends the broad and deep foundation laid by the School. From here, where girls become women, Southfield students continue to do their best today and better tomorrow.
